FWL acquires "LE CHOC DU FUTUR (THE SHOCK OF THE FUTURE)”

Films We Like has acquired Canadian rights to Le Choc du Futur (The Shock of the Future) about the unsung women of the emerging electronic music scene in 1970s France.

In the Paris of 1978, old formulas do not charm listeners anymore and new music must arise. In a male-dominated industry, Ana uses her electronic gadgets to make herself heard, creating a new sound that will mark the decades to come: the music of the future.

The deal was negotiated by Films We Like president Ron Mann and Quentin Worthington of MPM PREMIUM representing the film.

With the indefinite closure of theatres nationwide due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, the Canadian film industry is facing an unprecedented challenge. We applaud the efforts of theatres that have made it a priority to pay their employees, but unfortunately many workers have been laid off or had their hours drastically cut. In the spirit of solidarity with our community, we at Films We Like would like to help those cinema workers who are in need... by encouraging you all to stay safe at home as much as possible. For the next few weeks, we will be offering a curated selection of our titles on AppleTV for a special 99¢ rental price. All proceeds collected during these dates will be donated to the Canadian Cinema Workers Fund, an independent fundraising campaign to help pay out-of-work cinema employees in Canada.

Films We Like has acquired Canadian rights to celebrated Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke’s Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue following its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. Returning to documentary for the first time in a decade, the film follows a literature festival in the director’s hometown of Shanxi, China, featuring some of the country's most esteemed writers. With Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue, Jia masterfully crafts a sprawling exploration of 20th century Chinese society.

Her decades-long berth at The New Yorker energized her fans (“Paulettes”) and infuriated her detractors on a weekly basis. Her turbo-charged prose famously championed the New Hollywood Cinema of the late 1960s and ‘70s (BONNIE AND CLYDE, NASHVILLE, CARRIE, TAXI DRIVER) and the work of major European directors (François Truffaut, Bernardo Bertolucci), while mercilessly panning some of the biggest studio hits (THE SOUND OF MUSIC, MIDNIGHT COWBOY, DIRTY HARRY). Following its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Canadian film distributor Films We Like has acquired Canadian rights to Swedish filmmaker Roy Andersson’s About Endlessness . This is the second film by Andersson to be released by the boutique distribution company, who previously released his acclaimed A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence.

Films We Like presents the Canadian Premiere of Jacek Borcuch’s Dolce Fine Giornata, winner of the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2019 for the performance of Krystyna Janda who portrays a Polish Jewish Nobel Prize winner living in the Tuscan countryside. Films We Like has acquired the Canadian rights to the Manele Labidi’s debut film Arab Blues  (Un Divan A Tunis). The French language comedy starring Golshifteh Farahani is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival and will have its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Films We Like acquired the film from Paris-based international sales agent MK2.

Films We Like has acquired the Canadian rights to Karim Aïnouz’s drama The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão based on the beloved novel by Martha Batalha. The Brazilian film won Un Certain Regard’s top prize at this years Cannes Film Festival and will have its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Amazon Studios recently announced the acquisition of U.S. rights to the film from German sales agent The Match Factory.
