Brazilian Oscar Entry and Winner of Un Certain Regard ‘s top prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmão is the latest feature from prolific Brazilian auteur Karim Aïnouz, Set in mid-century Rio de Janeiro, the film is a sprawling melodrama about feminine resilience, based on the beloved novel by Martha Batalha. SYNOPSIS
Rio de Janeiro, 1950. Euridice, 18 and Guida, 20, are two inseparable sisters living at home with their conservative parents. Although immersed in a traditional life, each one nourishes a dream: Euridice of becoming a renowned pianist, Guida of finding true love. In a dramatic turn, they are separated by their father and forced to live half a world apart. They take control of their separate destinies, while never giving up hope of finding each other.
THE DIRECTOR
Karim Aïnouz was born in Fortaleza, Brazil. He studied architecture in Brasília and cinema at New York University. His films Madame Satã (02), Love for Sale (06), and The Silver Cliff (11) screened at the Festival. His other films include I Travel Because I Have to, I Come Back Because I Love You (09), co-directed with Marcelo Gomes, and Future Beach (14). The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão (19) is his latest film.
