The whole team at Films We Like is thrilled for the return of festival season , and we couldn’t be happier that the ever exciting Locarno International Film Festival is returning as well! For the first time since August 2019, the Locarno International Film festival will host in person screenings and world class filmmakers will have a chance to rub elbows as they compete for the esteemed Golden Leopard award. To mark the return of one of the most anticipated film festivals in the world, we have put together a new collection of films that have all competed for, or won awards at the Locarno International Film Festival. From poignant docs, to off-beat comedies and bizarro meta-horror, our For the Love of Locarno collection celebrates some of the greatest titles and story tellers to have graced the Piazza Grande.

Feel the fright of Peter Strickland’s horror-film-within-a-horror-film, BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO. Laugh out loud (or cringe) with Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe’s GREENER GRASS. BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO

1976: Berberian Sound Studio is one of the cheapest, sleaziest post-production studios in Italy. Only the most sordid horror films have their sound processed and sharpened in this studio. Gilderoy, a naive and introverted sound engineer from England is hired to orchestrate the sound mix for the latest film by horror maestro, Santini. Thrown from the innocent world of local documentaries into a foreign environment fuelled by exploitation, Gilderoy soon finds himself caught up in a forbidding world of bitter actresses, capricious technicians and confounding bureaucracy.

LUCKY

LUCKY follows the spiritual journey of a 90 year old atheist and the quirky characters that inhabit his off the map desert town. LEVIATHAN

LEVIATHAN is a feature-length film about men at sea and fish on boats. It offers an appreciation for the sensory experience, labor, and political and ecological stakes of one of the oldest endeavors that has been an important part of human history since the Paleolithic. Shot off the coast of the mythic city of Moby Dick, with eleven cameras swapping hands between the filmmakers and fishermen, in an effort to create a form of collective experimentation that gives free reign to the perspectives of both fishermen and their catch, the film seeks to capture the many ways in which human, animal, and machine; beauty and horror; and life and death all merge in uncanny ways in the world of contemporary commercial fishing.
