It’s September and that means one thing….. it’s #TIFFTime! The team at Films We Like is always excited when TIFF rolls around and our hometown becomes the epicentre of international cinema, but this year we are over the moon, with four of our films premiering and screening at the festival!

We are thrilled to see the 4K restoration see Guy Maddin’s 1988 cult classic TALES FROM THE GIMLI HOSPITAL REDUX and Brian Johnson’s THE COLOUR OF INK making their world premieres at the festival, and Jerzy Skolimowski Cannes 2022 Jury Prize Winner EO and Albert Serra’s 2022 Palm D’Or nominee PACIFICTION making their North American premieres at TIFF 2022. To mark this occasion, we have compiled a collection of films that include our films that will see their premieres at TIFF 2022, along with some of our favourite TIFF selections from past years.

TIFF TIME

TALES FROM GIMLI HOSPITAL REDUX (2022)

Originally released in 1988, Guy Maddin’s debut feature TALES FROM THE GIMLI HOSPITAL displays many of the narrative and stylistic themes that would become hallmarks of the renowned Canadian director’s acclaimed body of work. As two children worry for their ailing mother, their grand mother spins a parabolic yarn in which a man who is struck by illness must endure the existential challenges of isolation, jealousy, and sickness. Restored in 4K, TALES FROM THE GIMLI HOSPITAL REDUX  will make its world premiere at TIFF 2022 on September 10, 2022.

THE COLOUR OF INK (2022)

Following up his acclaimed 2015 doc AL PURDY WAS HERE, Brian Johnson’s THE COLOUR OF INK follows Toronto based ink-maker Jason Logan as he creates ink from foraged and found materials, and traces the story of Jason’s ink as it travels around the world, being used by an array of artists and creatives. THE COLOUR OF INK will make its world premiere at TIFF 2022 on Thursday, September 15, 2022.

EO (2022)

PACIFICTION (2022)

Nominated for the Palm D’Or at Cannes 2022, Albert Serra’s PACIFICTION is an entrancing thriller and complex rumination on colonialism, power, and human relationships. A suave French diplomat stationed in Tahiti must navigate his political position while rumours swirl  that the French government is poised to begin nuclear testing on the Polynesian island. PACIFICTION will make its North American premiere at TIFF 2022 on September 8, 2022.

WINDFALL (2010)

The film traces the troubled narrative of a proposed wind power project in upstate New York, which, ultimately divides the community members of a rural town.

AL PURDY WAS HERE (2015)

Premiering at TIFF 2015 and competing for the TIFF 2015 People’s Choice Award, Brian D. Johnson’s debut feature AL PURDY WAS HERE explores the enduring legacy of one of Canada’s greatest literary icons, Al Purdy. Including interviews from other iconic artists and writers including Gord Downey, Tanya Tagaq, Bruce Cockburn and Margaret Atwood, this film serves as a unique look into the lasting impacts of its titular Canadian poet.

A TOUCH OF SIN (2013)

An Official Selection of TIFF 2013, following it’s world premiere at Cannes 2013, where it was nominated for the Palm D’Or and won Best Screenplay Zhangke Jia’s A TOUCH OF SIN is a harrowing envisioning of modernization and violence. Tracing the seemingly disparate stories of four individuals four different provinces of China that all come to grisly and shocking conclusions, A TOUCH OF SIN is a striking cinematic experience from one of China’s greatest auteurs.

OUR TIME (2018)

Following it’s world premiere at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival where it was nominated for the prestigious Golden Lion, OUR TIME made its North American Premiere as an official Selection of TIFF 2018. In a deeply human exploration of love and expectations, the film tells the story of Juan, a renowned poet, who lives with his wife Esther in rural Mexico, raising fighting bulls. When Esther begins to fall for a ranch hand, Juan struggles to  reconcile his identity with his own self-expectations.

THE ACT OF KILLING (2012)

Joshua Oppenhimer and Christine Cynn’s perspective warping documentary THE ACT OF KILLING made it’s Candian premiere at TIFF 2012. The Werner Herzog and Erroll Morris executive produced film shatters the documentary lens and sees the former leaders of Indonesian death squads re-enact their own acts of violence in bizarre and surreal ways.
