FILMS WE LIKE DOES “ROMANCE”

In love, we tend to think in terms of passion, wedding bells, and happily ever afters. But the reality of "falling in love" is much more complex than that. This month, "Falling for Fall" features romance films that highlight all facets of love. In unconventional forms of love, tragedies, and madness, we see love that, although plentiful, may not always be compatible with life - or with happiness.

Starting off our romance collection are depictions of modern love. THE BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE blurs the line between identity, desire and love. In DOLCE FINE GIORNATA, a new love attempts, and fails, to bridge cultural and social gaps in a politically charged world. LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE highlights the transactional, awkward nature of love, while SOME VELVET MORNING showcases the ways in which we control and dictate narratives of romance and desire.

Love is ever-changing. Long distances test it in 10,000 KM, while tragedy frays it in THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN. Aging renders it unrecognizable in THE SHAPE OF REX. And sometimes, love descends into immorality. It is irresponsible and young in TABU, while it is calculated and ungainly in AMOUR FOU. It is all-encompassing and destructive in UNDINE and PREPARATIONS TO BE TOGETHER FOR AN UNKNOWN PERIOD OF TIME.

Rounding out our collection, THE WEDDING PLAN deconstructs our society’s obsession with marriage through a light-hearted comedy and a series of whimsical events.

At Films We Like, we're hopeless romantics because we love to see romance in all its forms. As Steven Cavell says, “If you would avoid tragedy, avoid love; if you cannot avoid love, avoid integrity; if you cannot avoid integrity, avoid the world; if you cannot avoid the world, destroy it.
