Films We Like is thrilled to present the Canadian theatrical release of Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy’s stunning film The Tribe. The critically acclaimed, multiple-award winning film— including the 2014 Cannes International Critics’ Week Grand Prix— opens July 17, 2015 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, Toronto and in select theatres across Canada.
Told entirely in Ukrainian Sign Language without subtitles, The Tribe is a haunting drama whose wordless dialogue speaks volumes. A deaf teenager enters a boarding school for the hard of hearing where he becomes part of a student gang involved in crime and prostitution. His love for one of his charges will unwillingly lead him to break all the unwritten rules within the tribe’s hierarchy, with tragic consequences.
The Tribe is director Slaboshpytskiy’s debut feature, recalling his own experiences going to school alongside deaf students as well as witnessing violence firsthand as a former crime reporter.
