Sphinx Productions AND Films We Like

Announce New 4K Restorations of Two Canadian Classic Films

Atom Egoyan’s

THE SWEET HEREAFTER

New 4K Digital Restoration

For Immediate Release - Toronto based Sphinx Productions in association with Films We Like and The Criterion Collection, have announced the start on a brand new 4K restoration of The Sweet Hereafter by acclaimed director Atom Egoyan. The award-winning 1997 film, based on Russell Banks’ novel, is regarded as one of the top 10 Canadian films of all time.

A small mountain community in Canada is devastated when a school bus accident leaves more than a dozen of its children dead. A big-city lawyer (Ian Holm) arrives to help the survivors' and victims' families prepare a class-action suit, but his efforts only seem to push the townspeople further apart. At the same time, one teenage survivor of the accident (Sarah Polley) has to reckon with the loss of innocence brought about by a different kind of damage.

Guy Maddin’s

ARCHANGEL

New 4K Digital Restoration

In addition, Sphinx Productions in association with Films We Like announced the start on a brand new 4K remaster of Archangel by famed director Guy Maddin. The 1990 film was awarded Best Experimental Film by the National Society of Film Critics.

Literally a film like no other, this weird, wild and extraordinary photoplay is both melodrama and deadpan parody. With striking black and white cinematography and stylized set design, Guy Maddin tells a tale of obsessive love in the arctic Russian town of Archangel, where Bolsheviks, White Russians and German Huns converge during World War I.

The two restorations are made possible by the generous financial support from Telefilm Canada’s Canadian Cinema –  Reignited program.
