Synopsis
Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century was a difficult home for Arnold Schönberg: poor and isolated, the revolutionary composer lived in one of Europe's most conservative musical scenes, and his provocative new music and Twelve-Tone method were met with hostility. Weinstein's documentary explores that period, featuring excerpts from live performances of Verklärte Nacht, the Gurre-Lieder, and String Quartet No. 2, among other works by the composer.
The director
Larry Weinstein is a Toronto director and a co-founder of Rhombus Media, with more than 40 productions to his name. He is celebrated for unconventional, emotionally charged music documentaries, among them Ravel's Brain, Beethoven's Hair and Mozartballs.
