"I caught this wonderfully engaging, entertaining and informative film at the SXSW Film Festival this year. Ron and I spoke together on a panel out there and got to chat a bit afterward over margaritas."
Mann, as always, has a keen eye for archival footage, but his own enthusiasm is what stitches it all together.
"KNOW YOUR MUSHROOMS is essential viewing for all human beings. Without these fascinating creatures our world would be uninhabitable. Finally a remarkable film explains some of their many mysteries and celebrates their presence among us all!"

Ron Mann, a Canadian national treasure for his contributions to the art of the documentary, is about to revolutionize film distribution. At least a little; potentially a lot.
Mushroom Doodles: A few days before the Know Your Mushrooms Possible World's event at Red Rattler, I asked myself: Can I make a zine as well as help organise all the decorations/installations for the night? Zine making for Punk Monk Propaganda- involved events has become a tradition of sorts for fellow Punk Monkey Alexander and I and somewhat of an obsession since we thought we'd try it out at ALGAE RHYTHM 0.01 earlier in the year.
"Ron Mann, makes films that explore those underbelly-ish, secret worlds where visionaries and explorers of the mind and spirit gather to play around with substances that alter our inner (and outer) universes"

Know Your Mushrooms, gem of Possible World's Canadian Film Festival premiered in Australia last Saturday night alongside a psychedelic carnivale of kaleidoscopic colour, dancing glowing bodies, circus tricks and pure devotion to the fungi. All hailed the man (Ron Mann) who brought us this combination of tripped out adventures, scientific teachings, fungi worship, pop culture pastiche and eye opening knowledge about the magic, joy and healing functions of the mushroom.
Last Saturday night, Ron Mann's excellent nature porn documentary KNOW YOUR MUSHROOMS played to a sold-out Red Rattler theatre as part of the Possible Worlds Canadian Film Festival. Big love to the Festivalists for inviting Punk Monk to throw together the installations for the evening. A playground like the Rattler is a treat for us, from its industrial warehouse street to its velvety lounge chairs.
Basically, people buy these USB keys for $59.99 -- which, I might add, are said to be almost sold out -- and are then encouraged to upload and share the film. Mann says: "We did this as a fun project. It wasn't a commercial venture." Nevertheless, it's a smart idea -- warm people to the film, and then how can they resist the charm of shroomy movie keys?
Director Ron Mann not afraid of unconventional film release in digital format.
"People are afraid of having their film released in a file format because it can be file-shared, but the truth is you can get a program (to do the same thing with DVDs) and you’re BitTorrenting anyway (in minutes). There’s really no difference," he said.
Beyond his artistic merits, Mann is also pushing the boundaries of technology. He's marking the DVD release of his Know Your Mushrooms by skipping the DVD part, and says he will instead distribute a special edition of his documentary on a 4-gigabyte flash drive.

"I realized no one's ever done this before and it's been incredible to see the response to a groundbreaking way of releasing films," he said.
